While it makes sense to me to keep us aligned with the IUF rules, I was floored to read that the IUFs required events had changed so drastically in the past 2 years.
Unicon should include at least one event from each of the following event groups. Hosts are free to add events, age groups or variations that do not appear here, as long as there is no conflict with the existing rules. When in doubt contact the IUF Rules Committee.
• Track Racing: the required races from section 2.17.
• Other Racing: Road, specialty/novelty races; see section 2.20.
• Team Games: Unicycle Hockey, Unicycle Basketball. See parts 9 and 10.
• Field events: Long Jump, High Jump, Gliding/Coasting. See part 3 and sections 2.20.2/2.20.3.
• Non-competition events: workshops, fun games, sightseeing rides, muni rides.
• Artistic events: Freestyle, Standard Skill, Flatland, Street; see parts 6 and 7.
• Muni: Cross Country, Orienteering, Uphill, Downhill, Trials; see part 5 and part 8
Does is make sense for the USA to follow their lead? (Please read the bold twice or three times, if necessary.) Should the USA mandate at least the events that will be held at the next Unicon?

Wendy,
"Unicon should include"
Thus if we do nothing with this rule, it does not apply to us at all since we are not Unicon.
Are you suggesting that the USA should have its own list or that there would be a problem if we used Unicon's rule?

This one I think is interesting. I think flexibility in actual events is needed as clearly interests and the sport evolves. I think the key question becomes when does the intent to commit to including an event need to be made. I would suggest that the USA should have a "rule" that requires convention hosting candidates to identify a minimum slate at the time of candidacy evaluation. Changes to the minimum proposed slate would require USA Board concurrence. Also suspect that finalization should occur timely enough to support people making monetary commitments (airfare, etc.) never mind their practice time.

Also Wendy, just FYI, the IUF Rulebook has remained basically the same on this issue since at least 2008. From the 2008 rulebook:
1.2 Host’s Option - Unicon
Unicon should include at least one event from each of the following event groups. Hosts are free to add events, age groups or variations that do not appear here, as long as there is no conflict with the existing rules. When in doubt contact the IUF Rules Committee.
- Racing—track races, specialty races, Marathon, 10km. See section 2.
- Team Games—Unicycle Hockey, Unicycle Basketball. See sections 8 and 9.
- Field events—Slow Race, Long Jump, High Jump, IUF Obstacle Course. See sections 2.18.
- Non-competition events—workshops, fun games, sightseeing rides, MUni rides.
- Artistic events—Freestyle, Standard Skill, Flatland, Street. See section 3.
- MUni—cross country, orienteering, Uphill, Downhill, Trials. See section 2.19 and 10.
